The Virtues of a Small Company
The Advantages of a Large One
Family Owned & Operated
Established in 2011 by Rutland Town residents Marlene and Philip Allen, the couple began the business as overgrown consumers, having gone solar themselves. Opening a ground-level storefront, providing local good-paying jobs to young people that were otherwise leaving Vermont and using American-made products wherever possible would help to establish solar as a “new normal” and benefit our local community, our state and our country.
We planned to work exclusively on small residential solar arrays, but have been amazed and humbled by the number of businesses, schools, non-profits and industrial clients that have entrusted us with their important projects.
In 2018, Same Sun expanded to a new storefront at 141 West Street. This 3000 square-foot space is powered by the sun via a solar awning and has battery storage technology as well as a dual EV charger in the parking lot.
Our Mission
To empower homeowners and business owners through the creation of their own energy.
Our Team
Marlene & Philip Allen
Marlene had been a commercial real estate appraiser in New York City and San Francisco, and Philip a fine art dealer in Chicago, New York and San Francisco. After moving to Rutland Town in 2006, they placed a rooftop solar array on their home and marveled at the effectiveness and simplicity of the clean solar energy as it powered their home, at the joy of owning their own power source, and of watching their electric meter spin backwards as excess energy was sent into the grid. Philip and Marlene became convinced that solar power must be the engine that drives America’s energy independence and that Vermont is uniquely positioned to be a leader in this cause.
Emily Palm-Stikkers
Emily relocated to Vermont to join the team at Same Sun. She brought with her a degree in Environmental Studies and Climate Change from the University of Montana, a NABCEP PV Technical Sales Certificate (TS-030320-029691), and a commitment to bringing renewable energy into every household. Other passions include renovating her 100-year-old home, sailing, climbing mountains, and knitting with her cats.
Josh Jones
Josh was raised in Ohio and came to Vermont to attend Green Mountain College. Joining Same Sun as an installer shortly after graduation, Josh rose to the position of Foreman, leading his own installation crew, and then into the role of Lead Service Technician. He now embraces his role as Project Manager.
Dave Gauthier
Dave started with Same Sun in October, 2021 as a Journeyman Electrician working with both our installation crews and in our service division. Since then, Dave has achieved his Vermont Master Electrician License (#EM-07729) and accumulated a great deal of solar experience, both assisting with complex interconnections and troubleshooting a variety of systems.
